SIGNALLING AND
TRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM

The Hyderabad Metro Rail operates using Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC), an advanced signalling and train control technology that enables precise, efficient, and safe train operations. This makes it the first metro system in India to implement full train control using CBTC.

Centralised Operations

All three metro corridors are controlled and monitored from the state-of-the-art Operations Control Centre (OCC) at Uppal, with a fully functional backup control centre at the same location to ensure continuity in case of emergencies.
The OCC features an overview display panel that provides real-time location of every train across all three corridors.

Train Operation

Headway as low as 90 seconds allows the system to handle peak-hour passenger demand efficiently.
Trains normally operate in Automatic Train Operation (ATO) mode, ensuring punctual and consistent service.
Automatic Train Protection (ATP) continuously monitors safe train operation, intervening automatically if deviations occur.

Redundancy and Safety

Axle Counter–based Fall-Back system serves as a secondary train detection method, ensuring reliability in the rare event of CBTC failure.
Computer-Based Interlocking (CBI) is deployed at stations and depots, arranged in redundant configurations for uninterrupted service.
Passenger Emergency Stop Plungers are installed on every platform and in Station Control Rooms (SCRs) to allow rapid stopping of trains during emergencies.

Depot and Testing Facilities

Major depots at Uppal and Miyapur are managed from their own independent control centres.
A test track at Uppal depot is used to verify train performance before passenger service, maintaining high safety and reliability standards.

Secondary Train Operating Modes

In addition to ATO, other operational modes such as ATP mode, Restricted Manual (RM) mode, and Cut-Out mode are available for use in special or degraded operating conditions.
All train-borne and wayside signalling equipment is designed with high redundancy and stringent safety requirements to prevent service interruptions.
