Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System

L&T Metro  rail (Hyderabad)  Limited (L&TMRHL) is proud to operate a world-class Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System — a modern, reliable, and passenger-friendly ticketing solution. Built on Contactless Fare Media Technology and QR Ticketing Solutions, the AFC system ensures a seamless travel experience with complete accuracy and security in fare collection.

Key Features of the AFC System:

The AFC system at Hyderabad Metro is designed in line with globally recognized standards for Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS) and offers the following:

  • Multiple ticketing options – Smart Cards, Tokens, and QR tickets (paper and mobile).
  • Convenient recharge options – Online platforms and Ticketing counters at stations.
  • Multiple payment modes – Cash, debit/credit cards, and digital payments.
  • User-friendly Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) and Add Value Machines (AVMs).
  • Enhanced passenger experience through modern interfaces and quick transactions.

How the AFC System Works

For secure and organized passenger movement, every station is divided into two zones:

  • Unpaid Area – accessible to all passengers for general station use.
  • Paid Area – accessible only to passengers with a valid ticket.

These two zones are separated by Automatic Entry/Exit Gates. A passenger can enter the Paid Area only after tapping a valid ticket or smart card at the gate reader. Similarly, upon exit, the gate validates the ticket again to ensure the correct fare is charged.
Both closed-loop and QR systems guarantee 100% ticket validation, prevent misuse, and ensure fair revenue collection.

Key Sub-systems of the AFC System

To provide uninterrupted service, the AFC system includes a network of advanced ticketing devices:

  • Automatic Gates – Controlling access to Paid Areas and recharging smart cards.
  • Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) – for purchasing single or return journey tokens.
  • Add Value Machines (AVMs) – for recharging smart cards.
  • Ticket Office Machines (TOMs) – manned counters for passenger support.
  • Ticket Readers: for checking card balance.

Fare Media and Products

  • Stored Value Card – fare is deducted per trip.
  • Flexible, reusable, and economical over time.

QR Tickets: Passengers can conveniently travel using QR codes. QR tickets are available through:

  • Metro counters (printed tickets).
